Chinese Vice Minister of Justice Xiong Xuanguo on Three-Day Official Visit to Singapore
1. The Vice Minister of Justice of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) Xiong Xuanguo will visit Singapore from 8 to 10 May 2019 to further legal exchanges and cooperation between China and Singapore.
2. Vice Minister Xiong will call on Singapore Minister for Law and Minister for Home Affairs K Shanmugam and Senior Minister of State for Law and Health Edwin Tong. He will also call on Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon and Attorney-General Lucien Wong, in affirmation of the strong and comprehensive ties between the Judiciaries and legal agencies of Singapore and China.
3. During the visit, Vice Minister Xiong will meet the President of the Law Society of Singapore Gregory Vijayendran S.C., visit Singapore Law Practices and interact with Singapore lawyers. He will also meet the Deans of the three Singapore Law Schools and the Managing Director of the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) and visit the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC), Singapore International Mediation Centre (SIMC), Singapore International Commercial Court (SICC) and Maxwell Chambers.
4. When Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Chinese President Xi Jinping met in September 2017 and April 2018, the two leaders discussed legal and judicial cooperation as a new area of collaboration between Singapore and China. In January 2019, SMS Edwin Tong visited the PRC Ministry of Justice and discussed furthering legal exchange and cooperation. The Singapore Ministry of Law and the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade also jointly organised the first high-level Singapore-China legal conference. The conference attracted over 300 participants and 300,000 online viewers. Vice Minister Xiong’s visit to Singapore will help take forward bilateral legal cooperation. He will be accompanied by PRC Ministry of Justice officials.
