1. The Government of the Republic of Singapore and the Republic of Kazakhstan signed the Agreement on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters (the “Treaty”) today.
2. The Treaty was signed by Singapore’s Minister for Law and Second Minister for Home Affairs Mr Edwin Tong SC and Kazakhstan’s Prosecutor General Berik Assylov on the sidelines of the 30th Annual Conference and General Meeting of the International Association of Prosecutors.
3. The Treaty is the first such treaty Singapore has signed with a Central Asian State. It will enhance cooperation between both countries in the prevention and suppression of crime, by providing a framework for both countries to make requests for and provide legal assistance in criminal matters to each other, such as in obtaining information and evidence, executing searches and seizures, and restraining and confiscating property traceable to proceeds of crime.
4. Minister Tong said, “Singapore and Kazakhstan enjoy excellent and longstanding relations, and our bilateral cooperation continues to grow, including in the economic, security and legal fields. This Treaty expands our cooperation, and signifies our joint commitment to prevent and suppress transnational crime between Singapore and Kazakhstan. I am confident it will pave the way for deeper legal cooperation.”
5. Prior to the signing ceremony, Minister Tong and Prosecutor General Assylov also exchanged views on several topics, and looked forward to strengthening the relationship between Singapore and Kazakhstan.
